How to Dance: Eleven Keys

Posted by Karim Shelton on Friday, August 10, 2012, In : Opinion
This list was created by Wali Ali Meyer from Spiritual Dance and Walk by Samuel Lewis. It is especially helpful as a reminder to all dancers (and leaders), no matter how long they have been using dance as an expression of faith—and especially helpful to those new to the dance. Enjoy!

Do not simply recite the sacred phrase. Listen to the other voices. Listen to the person directing the dance. When you begin to listen, you voice will automatically begin to harmonize. Find the center of t...

I Surrender

We were quite a small group this past month in our dance circle, and it is difficult to always know what others left with, but for me personally it was all about one thing—surrender. This is not always an easy lesson and fortunately comes in bite sized portions so I can digest it better.

The first dance of the evening was one taken from the Islamic tradition and used the phrase, "Bismillah Er Rahman, Er Rahim (We begin in the name of God, the Merciful and Compassionate). This is always a goo...

Sinai, God said to him, "Why didn't you inform me of my dinner invitation from my servants?" Moses said, "B...

People are naturally inclined to separate themselves from one another. It is human nature to relate to a specific group of people with whom you have some shared beliefs, values, ethnicity, gender, race, language, faith, etc. A proverb used since the mid-16th century says, “Birds of a feather, flock together.”

However, this very type of thinking has had an incredibly negative influence on society and consequently we have wars around the world, hate crimes, and manmade b...

God is even kinder than you think.

Inspired by the words of St. Theresa I created this image last year and attempted to bring some of the major faith communities we have in our local community together. This is only a minute sampling as it is difficult to draw borders around diversity.

One of the reasons I have returned back to this phrase and consequently decided to show a little of my art work is the news of the so-called minister in Florida who is insistent on burning Qurans as a protest against Islam. This speaks of a lot ...
